On Campus

On-campus housing is arranged through the University Housing Department. (This site also has recently expanded to include information on off-campus housing as well.) Students may apply for a dormitory room by filling out a UNC Housing application. Applications can be requested from

    Assignments Office
    University Housing
    CB #5500, Carr Building
    University of North Carolina
    Chapel HIll, NC 27599-5500
    FAX 919-962-1006
    Phone 1-800-862-5502

Return the application to University Housing with a $75 deposit, which is applied to the first semester housing payment. It is important to understand that once this legal contract is signed, it is considered binding and cannot be broken without penalty. Graduate students without accompanying family members who apply for dormitory assignment are housed in Craige Dormitory which is the only dormitory open year round.

Married students and those with children may request information or an application for family housing in Odum Village (Student Family Housing): however, there is frequently a 3 to 12 month waiting list for this facility. Other dorm information can be found in the housing booklet, "Community Living," which comes with the housing application. International students will receive additional housing information from the International Center along with their visa materials. Visit their web site for more information.

Off Campus

Apartments and rooms in private homes are available in Chapel Hill and surrounding communities. You will need to arrive early since it can be difficult to find housing after classes have begun. The Statistics Department has prepared a packet of material that contains local information about rental housing which we will be glad to send if you like. Please e-mail mhinich@email.unc.edu.

UNC's student newspaper, The Daily Tarheel now has on-line Classifed Ads which include apartments for rent.

The Advocate Classifieds are a feature of the Chapel Hill newspaper and contain many advertisements for houses, apartments and roommates.

The national apartment hunter, SpringStreet gives details on apartment complexes in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

The Chapel Hill/Carrboro Chamber of Commerce has a Relocation Center page as well as other interesting links.

The Apartment Book is a free apartment locator service.

Listserv

In an attempt to assist in conveying housing information to new students (including requests for identifying roommates or housemates), a listserv mailing list has been established, primarily to attempt to address the needs of in-coming graduate and professional students, but it is open to anyone with access to e-mail.

To subscribe, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.unc.edu, leave the subject line blank. In the body of the message type only subscribe unchouse [firstname lastname]. You will receive a welcome message with additional details and then receive or send any messages to the list about housing opportunities or needs.
